VOLUNTEER AT TOUGH MUDDER
Adults have forgotten that when it comes to our health, play is serious businesses, and Tough Mudder is on a mission to remind them. For us to succeed, we need you.
At Tough Mudder, we call volunteers our Mudder MVPs (Most Valuable Players) because they are indispensable to making our events come to life. Volunteers are our front-liners. Our MVPs are the first to greet all the Mudders upon arrival, they’re the ones who cheer participants on as they struggle to overcome the obstacles, and they’re the ones who put those hard-earned headbands on at the finish line. There are various ways an MVP can help, but whichever role, shift or position you choose, you’re guaranteed to be at the heart of it all, building lasting friendships and creating life changing experiences for everyone – including yourself.
SHIFTS
1. AT THE DOOR
We don’t get a second chance to make a great first impression – so it’s important we give our Mudders a warm, kind welcome upon arrival!
2. CHECK-IN
Mudders, especially when it’s their first time, will have doubts and uncertainties – our job is to provide the answers and encourage questions.
3. IN THE MIDDLE
Some of our obstacles push mudders to test their limit – to do that, they’re going to need your encouragement!
4. AT THE FINISH LINE
You’re going to be the one waiting for them at the finish line with the prestigious Tough Mudder headband on one hand and chilled beer waiting right behind you.
Volunteers aren’t paid because they’re worthless, but because they are priceless. Still, we can’t possibly ask for help without at least giving in return a token (or 5) of appreciation.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR OR BRING FOR MY SHIFT?
Depending on the location and day, the weather could be hot, cold, dry, humid, or wet. Keep in mind that in any of these scenarios, you’ll be exposed to the elements. So, check the weather before event weekend.
Here are our key recommendations:
Lots of layers: The volunteer t-shirt always needs to be the top layer, but we recommend lots of layers underneath so that you can adjust as the weather changes throughout the day. And, if you’re lucky, maybe you can even keep one layer mud-free for the trip home.
Waterproof gear: You may want to wear waterproof clothing in case it starts raising, you’re stationed near a water obstacle or water station, or you want to try and keep the mud off of you. If it is cold outside, staying dry is definitely a bonus.
Comfortable, sturdy shoes or boots: We require you to wear closed-toe shoes for safety, but also make sure they are comfortable. It’s likely that you’ll be standing for a lot of the time you are on-site, so shoes with good support which you don’t mind getting muddy will be your friend. (Think: Hiking shoes!)
If it’s hot: Hat, lots of sunscreen and sunglasses
If it’s cold: Hat, scarf, gloves, warm socks, a winter jacket, and sunscreen
Your favourite snacks: We provide a light breakfast and lunch, but do pack your favourite snacks and additional hydration to keep you sustained throughout your shift. You’ll thank yourself.
Other things to consider: If you’re happy to carry a mini-cooler around with you, fill it with your favourite snacks and bring it! If you want to enjoy what our food and beverage vendors have to offer, bring cash!
Your favourite snacks: Due to the complex nature of events we cannot provide food for those with specific food requirements (ie: food allergies etc).
